International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day initially commemorated the achievements and legacies of women’s movements in the early twentieth century. At the turn of the twentieth century, suffrage movements in Australia, Europe, and America succeeded in amending legislation to protect women’s legal and political rights including the right to vote, the right to stand for election to parliament, marriage law and property law.

Today, International Women’s Day commemorates the sacrifices and suffering of the suffragettes who campaigned for women’s rights and the many women’s rights champions since then. It also seeks to raise awareness of the changes that are still needed in order to achieve gender equality.
