Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017

On 7 December 2017, Australia officially recognised marriage equality. Before the Marriage Amendment Act 2017, the definition under Australian law limited marriage to being exclusively between a woman and a man. This discriminated against the LGBTI community.  On 7 December 2017, parliament legislated to amend the definition of marriage from ‘a man and a woman’ to ‘two people’. It is now legal for adult couples to be married in Australia, regardless of their sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status.
